Sue Stafford - Stafford & Queen
Stafford and Queen is a bespoke sculptural headwear range created by artist Sue Stafford.
Sue in her early career as a photographer was fortunate to experience timeless beautiful costumes & antiquities at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum. 1990-2000. Sue’s work at the Powerhouse Museum inspired her passion for old and new and texture and colour.
So began her arts career, designing and creating sculptural headwear.
Through experimenting with different materials, the creations grew from the ordinary and by pushing the boundaries and gravity.The headwear grew tall.
Sue has been tutored and mentored by the renowned Melbourne based Milliner Rose Hudson.
Sue also worked as an artist in residence (in-house) at the RPA hospital where she also worked as an art therapist. It was during this time that Recycle Reef was made, which explored the fragile and beautiful texture and inhabitants of the Great Barrier Reef and was later exhibited in RPA the foyer.
Recycle Reef was also exhibited at Sustainable Waste Art Prize SWAP, a competition created by Ryde Council to encourage reuse of waste and inform the public of our fragile environment. Recycle Reef received the award for functionality in the SWAP 2020 exhibition.
In 2000 Sue created a photographic exhibition titled “Women with Wings “ that showcased images of Australian women pilots, which was exhibited at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum.For her astounding contribution to women in aviation, Sue was awarded an honorary membership of the Australian Womens Pilot Association.
In November 2022 Beneath the Surface exhibition was launched at The Southern Highlands Artisans Collective” SHAC, a collection of plant like head sculptures made from repurposed materials.
Stafford & Queen is constantly creating innovative projects and exhibitions and is engaged in community towards equality and sustainability.
